Value of Staff Development

Well just reading your post and it gave me the clue why they didn't do well, assuming your'e right The reason is, they don't air many games.

So exactly what did YOU do in the war, daddy? Were you in news, production, master control or did you sweep the floors?

I saw whoever produced the Superbowl parade and it was horrible from a technical standpoint. I've worked at stations that did a lot of big projects and ones who didn't. Its a little like combat. The more you're in it, the better you work as a team. Its why in the military, we were always trainin for the occasional battle.

After getting out of TV, I realized they don't train their staffs often or thoroughly. Don't invite speakers, don't have training classes. Every other large local operation I worked in had training rooms, teaching equipment and teaching staff. Since I first got into my career work,I just assumed wassn't part of running a company, well except for the military.

I expect few in broadcasting ever had military experience so they had no clue how important it is to keep staff at readiness for whatever it is they do. As a reporter, I got invited to do stories on staff development, at schools, hospitals. Aircraft plants. Fire departments. Utility companies. Broadcasting, not so much. Best of Kansas City, hands down, was Hallmark.
