Tadpoles

The town recently put in a new culvert at Henry Marsh, just east of the "T" where water had built up and kept washing out the trail. Yesterday we were surprised to see many large tadpoles swimming around in the open water at both ends of the culvert. They must be Green Frog or Bullfrog tadpoles which overwinter for a year or more before becoming frogs. Unfortunately some won't survive when the shallow pools freeze up. (Bracebridge)

While researching which species have tadpoles that overwinter, I found this interesting article: https://www.americanscientist.org/blog/from-the-staff/the-giant-tadpole-that-never-got-its-legs

(note: the water level of the beaver pond at Henry Marsh has dropped a bit since the beaver baffles were cleaned out, but still plenty of depth for beavers and frogs)
