It wasn't safe. It definitely wasn't safe. And yet Mushroom had slunk away from her mother without so much as a second thought. Whether it was a lack of awareness of the danger or just not caring was anyone's guess. The mousey brown filly speckled with pale dots stuck to the edges of the meadow, at least at first. She kept to the shadows, doing her best to hide her fawn-like innocence in the darkness.
The filly stopped, finally, and peered out into the meadow. It was bright out there, sunlight stretching undisturbed across the expanse of grass and flowers. It was nicer, she thought, here in shadows. Rather than flowers, small mushrooms sprouted at the base of the trees where she lingered, refusing to give in to the light that threatened them. It was poetic, not that Mushroom noticed. One day she might. See how the darkness was pushed away for the outwardly light. But right now all she knew was she wanted to know what was going on here.
Giving a defiant bleat that sounded more goat than horse, the young girl stepped into the light. She blinked several times, adjusting to the sharp contrast from where she'd been only moments ago. She wore a scowl stretched across her whiskered lips as she slunk, head low, like a preying lion across the meadow.
It smelled nice, she supposed, but it didn't appeal to her. A few times she almost turned back for the comfort of the shade, but the iron-willed girl pressed on, finally coming to a particularly pungent patch of blue and pink flowers. She pressed her muzzle against one of the petals, inhaling. Blech! Reeling back, and falling onto her haunches, Mushroom stuck out her tongue in disgust.
"That's so gross," she whined, content to sit in the dirt for a few moments as she gathered her thoughts. |
