Consultants & Agents Saying Stay Away From Scripps TV

Scripps Senior VP Sean McLaughlin held a LinkedIn town hall, and we have a clip of what he said above.

One Scripps staffer who was on the call said, "Anyone who thinks the plan is being modified should have tuned in.."

McLaughlin talked about how Scripps bumped up the salaries for MMJs. He pointed out that now the MMJ in Boise might be content to stay in Boise, now that they are making a "livable wage."

The problem with that is you might be paid better, but you're still in fucking Boise.

There are several TV Agents who are urging their clients not to take jobs at Scripps stations. Two main reasons are that you get hired as an MMJ, and there is no room for advancement. Scripps is doing away with anchors, so if you're hired as an MMJ, you ill stay an MMJ.

The other thing that is giving Agents pause is that Scripps has given many of their MMJs large raises. But, the feeling is that if/when the "news initiative" fails, Scripps will likely look to lay those higher-paid MMJs off first.

McLaughlin then talks about News Directors and how so many NDs have come from the Producer ranks and don't know what it's like in the field.

As someone who worked in the field as a Photographer, Reporter, and Segment Producer, along with working the Assignment Desk, M.E., Producer, and EP, he is correct in what he says.

But, listening to what he is saying, it sounds like the current News Directors who came up through the Producer ranks might want to update their resume.
