GUIDELINES

- the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
- anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors

A soft rumble rolled through the dark sky, and Castillon lifted his head high to peer further out across the rolling Prairie hills. The grasses and flowers shuddered in the wind. The rain began to sprinkle downward lightly, pelting across his face, neck, and back. He snorted and flicked his tail, taking in more of the storm’s air, tasting the danger it promised. It seemed nothing more than a regular early summer storm, and Castillon had seen his fair share.

Still, he glanced off toward where he could see others of the Prairie herd killing about and nickered. They’d have already picked up that a storm was coming, but most of them wouldn’t seek the shelter of cottonwood or even the few large, bowled-in valleys that blocked the wind. They’d weather the storm, graze through the rain, and comfort the children as the thunder grew louder and caused their first storm fright.

Then, the sky darkened considerably fast, and the rain began pelting down harder. Castillon shook some of the water from his coat and snapped his damp tail out behind him; it’d grown somewhat heavier as it collected the rain. He pulled his knees high and began to trot quickly, ears turning back as he cut through the rainfall. Castillon was looking specifically for the mothers with children, especially Hirka. He needed to be there for them in case-

Lightning cracked bright and he felt fear strike his chest, despite how prepared he might’ve been for it. Castillon leapt to the side and kicked out, squealing offense as if the flash of bright light and the accompanying loud clap of thunder was a tangible enemy he could strike. His hooves collected back under him just as he felt something small and hard pelt against his topline; it stung a little, like he’d been hit by a pebble someone had kicked up under their hooves while he ran too close behind him.

He went further and felt a few more, some larger than others. Some of the icy chips caught on his hair and stuck there as little bits of white among his sea of black hair. His worry doubled as the storm seemed to be mounting quickly. The next bellow he let loose was a more panicked, more urgent one, demanding any who heard it to seek shelter. His duty would be to sweep across the Prairie and make sure everyone was safe, but Castillon surely had some he was looking out for specifically, and he hoped everyone was okay.

He hadn’t even noticed the funneling of dark clouds stretching in the sky far behind him.
