GUIDELINES
common sense, really
i. the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
ii. anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
iii. adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
iv. the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
v. the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors

Aura

"You keep going for them."

His voice was soft then as the stallion replied to me. His brown eyes met mine, our varying shades of optic honey and sepia wavering through my tears. Castillon stretches his head toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. As the words flow from his mouth, tears stream down my cheeks. But I listen.

In my isolation, I had only barely observed the other residents here in the Prairie. I hadn't remembered seeing buckskin with other ladies or children, but I saw very little other than the slow passage of time and the black depths of my grief. Castillon's voice was strengthened with a fervor that I had not known in my lifetime. His view as a father solidified the knowledge that of course my parents would have sacrificed themselves for my twin and I. If the sacrifice to be made, they would always have ensured our safety. I had known that, but perhaps my mother and father wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

I am trembling by the time Castillon finishes. My weight slowly shifts back toward the solid mass of his golden body. My skin slides against his with the movement, and I reach for him instinctively. My muzzle lingers against his before gently brushing past to his cheek in a way that is intimate to me. He is right. They wouldn't want me to blame myself, and I've known that all along. I let my head twist upon my neck so that I am resting against him as I had been before, my head leaning into the span of his neck. My voice has returned to the strangled whisper.

"I know. . . I know."
