find my nest of salt

everything is my fault. . . I'll take the blame

The muscles in the black mare's throat clenched violently as her fright rose. She was supposed to be with Nephilim. That's what Vervain had been planning: to meet the boy when he came ashore. Yet here he was, freshly arrived and the girl hadn't been seen all day. The pale men spoke quickly: Nephilim about deep tracks on the beach before taking off for the Crossing and Zevulun uttering a promise to find her dark daughter.

Daire's form racked wretchedly with an ugly sob. Her one true hope was the Vervain had simply lost track of time with the young stallion. He was supposed to be the answer. Now Daire was adrift. Scared, brown eyes turned to Zevulun as she tried to catch her breath. Her cream mate was already focused on her; she had barely registered his call to the herd. "Daire... I promise I'll find her." The brindled mare can't manage a smile, her expression pained. She wanted to have faith in him, but Daire was drowning in guilt, blaming herself for not keeping her precious girl home. With tears streaming down her cheeks, the dark mare nods excessively, trying to reassure herself and Zevulun both: Vervain had to be on Luthien.
