Re(2): No What-A-Burger, No Denny's, No Walmart

Oakland's been an armpit for years. Their problem is they let it get out of hand and now they're outnumbered and what few people left in the nice neighborhoods can't pay enough in taxes to clean it up.

If there's graft, its about why they're not taxing every container that gets unloaded. A $20 tax would raise enough money to haul off all those RV's pick up the trash and build right priced housing. That drive around with those two guys narrating 'ain't it aweful' was no substitute for serious journalism.

I'm sure somebody's done major demographic research on the people in the po' side of town as to ages, employment, skills, education, public transportation. If the city wanted to they could clean up the refuse that's so depressing.

Everyone knows that if you allow a ghetto to look like one, the residents won't bother to bend over to pick it up. But if its clean, they will. I saw virtually no people in the film.

What is the culture in the areas that aren't zoned residential but are filled with RV's. Poor whites, poor blacks, poor non English speaking Latinos in an area that's warm but there are no crops to harvest, what?

Every City has po' areas. Some are well policed and have HOA's to force owners to keep the trash gone, no semi's in the street, no abandoned cars. And other city governments don't care. First thing I'd look at is what's the tax base?

Maybe the Feds, if we get rid of the Republicans will constitute Marshall Plans in the urban ghettos of America, gather up the refuse and recycle it, landfill it, whatever. The Europeans were flattened during WWII but you wouldn't know it now.

Detroit took out all the 150 year old immigration ghettos, left the streets and broken sidewalks, razed the housing and planted grass on it, waiting for industry to do something with it. I've got pictures.

There's places in the Dotte that look just like Oakland. But Cali's a fair weather place and a lotta money's being made out there so there'll be both rich and poor, practically separated only by interstate highways. If Cali's going to turn itself into a megacity like Mexico City, rio, Singapore and places in India, that's their own fault.

There was one interesting part. Walmart has killed off more small towns than any entity. Just drive out 50 miles outside every Walmart around Salina, Manhattan, DDC, and no doubt on the MO side, and you'll see emptied out small towns whose merchangs couldn't compete with their buying power and closed rather than sold or gave them to their kids. The kids left town for the city and probably drive forklifts in the Dotte.

It is, tho refreshing to year some social concerns in here besides trashing the COO of a mega communication company; I am not particularly sympathetic tho to the whinings of a low skilled worker who will soon be replaced by automation if not just shut down. For all your bitching, what was your major in college?

All those people in Oakland and JOCO who live in quarter to half million dollar houses, THEY make good money and so willl their kids when they come home with advanced educations in today's higher paid industries.

Am I wrong or aren't most people in the media now just computer operators? Operators dont make money but we guys who learned how to program you out of your jobs, WE are living in nice houses. Why didn't you learn how to program? Every company in town needs skilled technicians...but you all have chosen an industry where there are only a dozen companies in town who require what few skills you have.

In broadcasting if you lose you job, you have pack up, sell your house if you even have one and accept a job whereever someone invites you. If you were in another industry and have skills, you'd be working in a week! It totally depends on your worth and where you live. Just don't go to Oakland but if you do, walk the nice neighborhoods and find out where those homeowners are employed, then go to those employers, find out what their needs are, and go get those skills. Dunno about you, but I dont know anybody whose poor.

IF I did, I bet I'd learned they were raised by parents who didn't have the ability to motivate their kids to make something out of themselves. Its not like there aren't grants and loans to pay for skills and many pay very well with just a couple years effort if you catch on quickly and have self discipline.

I've been saying in here for Twenty years, I wasted at least ten dicking around in a low paying industry. Things didn't start happeneing for me until I got out of local media. The people I knew younger than me assured me that there IS life after Television...that's an exact quote and she landed a good job with her writing and media skills but she got into public education and they dont' treat their employees like expenses. They retrain their employees like assets. I learned that when I got out and I was getting skills on OPM (Other People's Money.) I said the same things in here 20 years ago and bully Jim and board ops/studio staff shouted me down. WHere are they now?

What is it our dads said to us? "If youre digging yourself into hole, first thing you need to do is quit digging?"

People in this room ahve been bitching about their companies since I came in here; Jim was so short sighted he dissed my good advice. Some listened, left, and don't come back. Others are probably still whining. So quit digging while you're young enough to find something else--put in the prep time you should have when you started out and just pretend you're 15 years younger than you are. No one will know. You wait til you're a gray hair, you waited too long. Covid's long gone. Time's a wasting. And the Help wanted signs will stay out there so long as you vote Democrat.
