How does the multi-billion dollar industry of baseball measure speeds? I read about speed guns and it seems that the speed is measured near the point of release and not the destination. One difficult matter on a fronton vs. baseball is that the mound is stationary while pelotaris are catching and throwing from various locations on the court. I'd still like to see a respected speed measurer go to both Dania and MC and give us the best data available by testing the speed of all player's throws at both facilities (with or without the cooperation of management). The other night Reds shortstop Cruz through a ball across the diamond that was measured at 106.9 mph. I'd like to know the process used to make those determinations. How often are they throwing more than 150 mph as claimed by some? I care about the speed, so whoever gets this done will have my thanks. Note about the balls: A traditional pelota lasts only about 20 minutes in play and then it's off to the ball guy for restitching. In the case of Dania, that's Paco, who you may have seen play at Daytona decades ago. Not sure of the exact composition of an MC ball. It has a hard rubber ball inside a wrapping of white electrical tape (though I don't know if the ball is solid rubber or an outer core of rubber with something inside. A retired Calder pro threw a MC ball at Fronton Salas and decided for the safety of players that ball was too fast for recreational play on the 100' court of Cancun. I matched an old ball from Ft. Pierce vs. a Magic City Ball. From a height of 38.25" the old pelota bounced off a concrete porch at 22" while the MC ball bounced at 24 inches (dropping both about 10 times) and without heating them beforehand (As Jeff Conway has been known to take a ball to his car and juice it up with a microwave he keeps there for just that purpose at St. Pete). As for the need to know any of this, the more info people are given, the more they can find something interesting to them they can latch on to. Replies:
