i dream in phosphorescence

The playful intonation of the mare’s voice pleased the Arabian, eliciting a further smile on his ash-tinted maw. Pleasantly surprised by the mare’s initial demeanor, Helios let her statement and its tone serve as an encouragement to come closer to her. The stallion could not help but let his own eyes wander over the half-mask of color resting on her face, the way it swept up the bridge of her nose before cascading down one cheek as he did so. It was not dissimilar to the way he perceived her to have glanced over him just a moment before: appreciatively. The glint of the sun in the hue of her irises further entranced him as she too stepped closer with a smile on her lips. Intrigued, the russet male extended his nose to meet hers without seeming overeager.

The back of the desert stallion’s mind had held an unrealized suspicion that would have disturbed the desert stallion upon further examination, but it began to fade once the smell of the visitor entered his nostrils. Nothing she had done – apart from appearing in the Dunes alone – had instigated this thought. Moreover it was derived from the apprehension Helios had begun to feel toward strangers outside of his lands and their unknown intentions. Whatever his irrational fear might have been, the smell of the sea cast a rich, salty overtone to her scent, but there was no denying the traces beneath that proved her not to have been on Salem long. Helios had never left the arid southern island himself since his arrival, but he had learned some knowledge of the other islands from his predecessor Antares.

Lastly, beneath the salt and sweat and scented remains of the land she’d left behind was the sweet scent of the season’s temptations and the distinct lack of another male's odor clinging to her skin. Helios had prided himself on knowing that his ladies had all chosen him and the Dunes. Yet even he had difficulty this time denying his baser instincts to take control of the situation and push her further inland, to push the bounds of their new acquaintance by pursuing baser instincts, especially now that he assumed she was unattached. That strength of mind wavered further as the spotted beauty spoke again. Freshly arrived from another island and willing to wander deeper into the Dunes: what excellent luck. All doubt and suspicion dissipated.

”There is nothing to forgive,” he assured her. "We'll call it a happy accident." A brief, but warm chuckle rumbled in the stallion's throat. The creamy length of his tail flicked casually as his position shifted. "As for water," -- Helios gestured then with a single sweep of his head toward a ridge not far off in the distance -- "there is an oasis nearby I would be more than happy to escort you to." The dished profile of the Arabian turned to more fully face the mare once again. The smile that rested on his lips became more confident somehow as his eyes rested upon her, but the young stallion was enjoying the anticipation: wondering about her, where she had come from, and if he could persuade her to stay with him in the Dunes. It was a wonderful change of pace.

"Shall we go now then?"

Helios
