Helios had been ruminating all day long about losing Daffodil, Romaro's love, to that black creature from the Lagoon. He had been the only one allowed to protect her and had failed yet again. The thrice defeated stallion could only stare out at the ridges of dunes off into the distance. Normally he would have basked in the company of his mares and their newborn children or played with Solaire and Caesarion to lift his spirits. This day, this loss, instead pushed him away from them, his confidence shaken.
He had never intended to be known as a stallion that others could just take from. He had found enemies in his complacency and in his desire to protect others. The coppery stallion seemed to glow in the late afternoon as it darkened to evening. The desert winds cooly whipped through his creamy tresses, the ends stinging his skin in whispers. When the now too familiar scream poured into the air much too close to the herd, Helios launched into action. Even if he couldn't protect them from this unrelenting brute, he still had to try.
He found Lucifer quickly, eyes aflame in the setting light. His copper ears folded back against his poll, obviously not happy to see the other male. Who was at risk now? Who could he possibly want this time? Why couldn't he leave well enough alone? The Arabian's light-colored tail lashed against his hocks, numb to any pain from it now. His voice was laced with scarcely concealed anger. "What do you want, Lucifer? Can't you ever leave us in peace?"
