{ so here we are, the witching hour }

the quickest tongue to divide and devour

Much has changed. The seasons come and go, the world turns, and the foundations upon which Starscream had grown comfortable upon have crumbled beneath him. The void inside him yawned, its jaws gaping ever more widely. He was insatiable, restless, and the reason he’d haunted the lower slopes of the Peak for all this time had been snatched away from him. Starscream did not think Naydra would return, this time.

Any other soul might grieve and mourn, but Starscream was a creature unlike any other. He had work to do. Pantheon was out there somewhere, as were his lesser sons, scattered amongst the island chain. Starscream did not know what a reunion with any of them would bring about, but he trusted that in the moment, he would know - within himself - which course to take.

He was unsure how far he’d be able to stray from the Peak, or whether any of the mares there would even come after him once they noted his absence, but it mattered little to the bronze stallion. If they came, he would claim to be searching for Naydra’s daughter, and if they demanded he return - though what use would they have for him, when it had been clear from the start that he was there for Naydra alone? - he would return, for now, without any fuss.

If it came to it later - once he had discovered the whereabouts of Pantheon - Starscream would find his way off the mountain if he set his mind to it. But for now, he welcomed the solitude of the meadow, picking his way through the lush grasses.

Starscream spotted the mare before the girl, and paused in his unhurried stride, angling his head toward the blanketed bay, recognition flashing through him, so that if he’d been closer, a gleam might’ve been glimpsed in his eyes. A subtle tilt of his muzzle allowed him to get a better view of the filly in his periphery, though he dared not express too great an interest in the girl just yet.

There was no way of knowing how his sudden appearance would be received. Starscream had been attentive during the brief time they’d been together, and he was certainly not quick to assume anything now, nor sweep in boldly, blinded by something so rudimentary as a presumptive display of dominance. He’d tread, carefully, be respectful and observant. That the girl was no meek and mild thing, clinging to her mother’s side was a good start, but Starscream would seek to know her better, before he attempted to lay any sort of claim of kinship with her.

After a momentary pause, Starscream let loose a nicker, and took a few steps - toward the mare - and then halted, willing to take his lead from the mare.

For now, at least.

love,
STARSCREAM
