The black tovero mare nearly fell to her knees when she finally made it to shore. Her legs shook so violently that the paint had to stop and rest in the sand. Each breath dragged roughly against her throat from the saltwater she'd swallowed on the horrendous swim over. Her stomach churned heavily.
It had been hard to believe that just yesterday evening she had told her brother she was leaving. Martyr had understood ultimately, but it had taken most the night to convince him that he didn't have to accompany her to the Peak. This was something she wanted to do on her own.
The painted siblings had stuck together like glue for the last several years. Had it been truly been six years since their parents first went missing? Emerson could remember finding her mother and the scent of their baby brother in the quarry. It was hard not to remember one of the more tragic moments of her life. The pain of losing her parents so young had been hard to bear, but it was manageable now.
These were the thoughts that milled through her mind as Emerson caught her breath and recovered from her swim. She certainly hadn't expected to get caught in a current, but the mare was glad her brother hadn't been dragged into it, too. Things could have gone much worse than winding up further west on the Crossing than she had intended. Though perhaps that remained to be seen.
After an hour, Emerson, feeling quite well recovered, slunk north in the direction of the far mountain peak. She didn't know the proper boundaries on the Crossing, and thus was unaware of the potential danger she was in. However, Emerson was not the sort to go anywhere without a fight.
