She could feel his eyes on her. At first, she didn't let herself return his gaze. He was painfully handsome, from what she could see at this distance. He was about her height, but his build was thicker and stronger than her own. It made her feel petite, somehow, which she appreciated. It was hard as a 16-hand mare to feel petite in the presence of most stallions. His color, too, felt more exotic to her. Where she was mostly solid and plain, save for the soft green of her eyes, he was freckled with pretty dots of white like the snow that fell on the Crossing in winter.
And yet he didn't approach.
She waffled over the idea of approaching him and just ending the weird back and forth of their stares but ultimately decided to turn away from him instead, presenting him with her hip while she continued to graze. If she wanted to find a home where someone wanted her, the last thing she should be doing was approaching would-be claimants herself.
When he finally did approach, she had to stifle the little bubble of excitement that rose in her chest and turned to face him with a carefully constructed nonchalant expression on her face. She wasn't bored really, but she didn't want him to think she was too into him... just in case that was a turnoff. What she didn't expect was for him to call her out on it immediately and a startled little laugh of embarrassment escaped her.
"It's a talent." She responded, her chin lifted to hide her shame. "What took you so long anyways? You've been staring at me forever."
Her green gaze roved across his handsome face before she finally lost the fight with her smile and it cracked open. It was an unusually shy smile for the bold little mare, but no less bright for it. "I'm Roux," she added as an afterthought, tossing the swath of her flaxen forelock to the side.
