The sun hesitates

There are a few long moments of silence as the two catch their breath, the quiet of the Bay atmosphere filled only with the sounds of air rushing into cavernous lungs and then quickly expelled again. The ivory mare catches the intruder’s eye once or twice, until finally they’ve recovered enough to speak.

“Why did you save me?” he asks, and Eva pauses to consider a response. At this point, she is fairly certain that they are safe — if the bear was going to catch up, it would have by now. Her eyes focus on the huge stallion, no longer drawn away by the untrustworthy shadows behind them. Her gaze is sharp and critical, no longer glazed with fear or relief.

“I didn’t,” she says finally. “I saved the Bay herd. I thought you might run toward them and bring the monster with you.” She doesn’t say “my herd”, and thinks maybe she should have lied. A prickle of fear that the intruder might take this opportunity to snatch her off the island and back to wherever he came from, unhindered by members of a herd that was not her own, raises the hairs on the back of Rieva’s neck. Her eyes narrow, and her gaze cuts down to a suspicious glare. She takes a half-step back from him, her smoky tail flicking nervously.

“What are you doing here, anyway?” she asks, trying to compose herself and hide her anxiety. She is suddenly aware that, after not speaking a single word to another soul in all of her time alive, here she is: having a conversation. She swallows. Is she too loud? Too quiet? Is it obvious she’s only ever spoken to herself? She is nearly too overwhelmed to hear the stallion’s answer, if he has one for her. She’s breathing shallow and fast, and her muscles are tensed as though she is prepared to bolt back into the woods, bear be damned.
