ooc: please note while this thread is posted by board time of the fall season, this is a historical thread and it actually takes place in late spring (may '24) this thread follows nephilim finding vervain in the commons!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As much as it might’ve benefited him to get a few hours of sleep, even a light dozing, Nephilim found he couldn’t. The entirety of the night he stood beside Vervain and kept his eyes stuck sharply on the direction she’d spoken of, occasionally glancing suspiciously around them too. No one was trusted and the normally kind stallion made sure to turn his ears back at anyone who looked curiously their way. If they pushed the invisible boundary he’d decided on, he would leap across the distance and charge them until he got them to run off and leave them be.
Thankfully it never came to that.
Eventually Vervain’s daughter was awake and it was time to travel the rest of the long journey home. They’d have to walk up the length of Crossing Isle only to be met with another swim, and Nephilim had no intention of letting them spend another night away from the safety of the Prairie. When Vervain proposed their travel as a secret game of fun for her daughter, Nephilim joined in. He went along with anything Vervain needed and tried to make this easier for her… Well, as easy as it could be, at any rate.
When the games had to stop and the curious barrage of questions came, Nephilim answered them all. Raising Dasra and helping raise Nasatya had taught him the patience of being a father, and he found himself growing fond of Vervain’s girl as they spent the day traveling. She was no part of whatever evil had taken her mother, he was sure of it. This was Vervain’s daughter, born of her good heart and insatiable curiosity.
At last, after the swim from Peak shoreline to Luthien coast, they climbed ashore of the Prairie. Nephilim looked at Vervain and reached to softly lay an affectionate touch on her shoulder, as much as he felt guilty for wanting the physical connection to her. He tucked his chin back, mindful of it, and only watched her as she saw the Prairie again. “Welcome home,” he whispered, voice raspy with the emotion he was suddenly overcome with.
