Maurice I was a spec dog handler 94 -2001
I was a vehicle search dog handler in 3 R irish dog section mahon rd portadown.initially on completion of a 6 week course which turned into a 8 week course because I had to wait for the dog draft going to NIin September so for 2 weeks I had to amuse my self with regards to training.my 1st dog was a border collie which took a lot of relationship training because he was found in a black bin bag in a river apparently before he was rescued .when I got back to NI I had to go to Ballykelly to be assessed before I could become operational.that all done we commenced work all was fine in the sunshine so to speak bit when the winter set in that cold blowing up the A1 at 2am and the cold cold nights In the mall in armagh he couldn't handle it.so he was retired off to a farm.then along came b994 rebel vs a springer spaniel and not one monkeys did he give about the weather 😂 we did our training in Ballykelly they left me to my own devices then did my pass out assessment in drumadd bks armagh 💯 bang on the semtex hidden in the steps of the bus 1st task complete then 2 outside searches finished with an inside search big hgv HME that's home made explosives for the uninitiated hidden in the back of the trailer.94-2001 we did helicopter vcps and spent 2 weeks with the marines on carlingford lough searching freight ferry's and those beasts don't stop for you catch them up in a rigid raider ladder is thrown over marine up 1st then the dog is hoisted up in a harness then me climbing the ladder no fun at 3am at 20 knots but the dog loved it on choppers he would sit by the load master and look out 😂. rebel loved oranges and could peel one with his teeth better than you could do with a scalpel.i have loads more stories Maurice but you are probably sound asleep with me waffleing 😂.
