Just read a post re the higher number of immigrants as a percentage of population, calling it "nation-ending"

Stuff like this drives me crazy. Beyond the obvious that we are a nation literally built on immigration from a variety of cultures, religious beliefs, identities, etc., the whole US democratic experiment is essentially predicated on the *idea* of America being more important than where you came from. As long as you believed in freedom, individual rights, democracy and so on you could *become* and American.
As someone has said, there's no other nation in the world where this is true. We have a long (sometimes bumpy) history of assimilating people into the social and cultural fabric of this country as long as they shared our fundamental beliefs. Your nation of origin didn't matter. Your economic status didn't matter. Your ability to speak the language didn't matter. If you were willing to work, accepted the basic precepts, and didn't work to subvert the country you were welcome. (I don't need a history lesson on what immigration was *really* like, here, btw.)
The criticisms of these people has been repeated so many times and proven wrong just as many times about other immigrant groups you'd think at some point they would stop repeating them. They come in as immigrants, their kids go to American schools, and by the third generation they are every bit as "American" as any other person in their country.
America was born on idea. As long as you shared in and believed in that idea you added to the stock of human capital that has made us the strongest and most prosperous country the world has ever seen. It falls the shit out of me that this battle has to be fought over and over again because it is politically useful to some people to demonize these newer immigrants in attempt to scare the fuck out of dimwits who are scared of their own shadow and will believe literally anything about these "other" people.
They're not nation-ending, they're nation *building* you idiots Replies: There have been no replies.
