It was some days later before Helios felt confident enough to approach another ruler. For the first step toward peace, the Arabian had chosen to approach Evrain, the blue king of the Hills. In their few dealings, the overo stallion had always proved level-headed and reasonable. Word of mouth told the copper male that Evrain was related to those who yet remained in the Badlands. Helios was tentatively hopeful that this connection -- should Evrain rally to the cause -- would help to sway the Badlanders toward it as well. Remembering his previously ill-mannered experiences with his westerly neighbors, Helios knew he had to take all the luck he could get.

The sun was descending toward the horizon at his back when the Dunes king began the journey toward the Hills. He met his eldest son Caesarion along the way, and the colt wordlessly joined him. Helios sensed something shifting within the red boy, something he wasn't ready to share yet. As much as the stallion wanted to pry or have his son confide in him, he said nothing. He would just have to wait until Cae decided to share. As the terrain became steadily rockier the further east they went, Helios turned his mind from the nameless issue with his heir toward the one now at his hooves. A bright whistle loosed from ashen lips, beckoning the blue king to the task at hand.

Helios
