Re(2): Rock Pigeons in Gravenhurst

A number of years ago Silvia and I were in Gravenhurst early on a Sunday morning, getting gas at the Petro-Can station. A semi truck and trailer was there, containing dozens of stacks of cages, all full of racing pigeons. We watched in awe as the trucker released all of these birds -- there were over 1000 -- at one time. They circled up into the sky overhead, seemed to spend a few moments orienting themselves, then flew off southwards, heading back to their coops. Speaking to the trucker as we watched this event he explained he did this regularly as part of the racing schedule for a Toronto based homing pigeon association. I'm not sure if it still happens, but this may have been a source of pigeons in Gravenhurst at one time, as there are always a few that don't return home. Regarding food -- there is at least one person located near the downtown that has many dozens coming to their yard at all seasons.
