whispers in the tall grass

Hazel eyes, set in the face of a roaming stallion, took in the sight of the thick, rolling fog with little more than tempered frustration. Lir loosed a heavy sigh, which sent his pale nostrils quivering. His frustration was not merely at the fog; it was a common enough occurrence in the Prairie no matter the season. No, it seemed the islands itself, or rather its men that vexed him.

Vervain was still lost to them a year later. Her absence was the source of an unyielding ache in the dunskin's chest. They had only just reconnected, only just begun settling into a new life and routine since she and her daughter Velaris had come back last summer. By fall, she was gone again.

It had been around the same time that his dark sister had been taken that Lir had first met Lavender. She, too, had been taken by the goons in the south. The golden-painted mare had stuck in his mind all this time, enough so that still Lir pursued her freedom. His latest battle had ended in failure, and this frustration- amongst many others- prevented the overo from returning home just yet.

He hadn't expected to hear a voice coming from some yards away through the dense mist. Golden brown eyes twisted toward the sound of her -- a nameless mare -- some yards off: "Ursa, is that you?" The name didn't seem familiar to him, but her voice.. Something about it drew the painted male closer to the voice's source.

"No," came his answer, tinged with an unasked question. His hazel eyes searched valiantly through the mist for the shape of her. Some tentative question needled his brain. "I'm Lir," the stallion offered, turning the whole of his pale face in the direction of the figure he now spied through the earth-bound clouds. "But maybe I could help you find them again."
