take a sad song,
& make it better
He echoed her assertion that men believed they would get lucky approaching mares in autumn, as if such a thing were not obvious. Why else would the commons be so popular this time of year? Were it not for the potential of procreation, why would mares seek new homes right before winter arrived? Still, the smart-mouthed sabino does not answer him, only allows her smirk to broaden, assured in her understanding of the world.
There was something off about the dark stallion that she couldn't place, a disconnect somewhere in his demeanor and bearing, but it refused to become obvious to her searching eyes. If he was playing a part, he was doing so well, even down the predictable answer he provided to her final question.
As a creature given to seeking adventure and a spirit as sassy and wild as her own, she could not hide the subtle nose wrinkle of dismay when he gave her the easy, safe answer. She smoothed it away quickly, drawing in a breath before she chose her next reply.
"I suppose you are technically correct," she answered, casting her gaze sideways for a moment as she considered whether or not she would give his almost-question the answer he was looking for.
"My name is Catalina, if that is what you were not-asking." Her beloved mama had always shortened it to Cat, but such familiarity was not something she intended to offer right away to stallions she barely knew.
You're being mean, bebe. She could hear her mother murmuring in her ear, half-scolding, half-proud. And Cat could not deny it. She
was, if only because she felt so out of her element here, reduced to another lonely damsel seeking the attentions of a stallion that might have well gone to an all-you-can-eat-buffet. She sighed, shook her head minutely and then affixed her gaze on the massive black stallion.
At least he's not so bad to look at, and Cat suppressed a smile, knowing that she did not disagree with the disembodied voice in her head. He might be massive, and a little scary, but there was a certain kind of charm to his dark and broody countenance.
"Perhaps you might tell me something else of yourself, Lucifer. Something that will tell me more of your personality than a name alone can say." Which wasn't exactly... nice, but it was
nicer than her original plan of sitting there silent until he revealed more of his true self.
