The stallion had turned his head sharply toward the sound of a mare calling for him. His ears pricked forward, rotating in small degrees every other moment before springing in the direction from which her summons had come. The individual tones told Helios that it was not a long-time member of the herd but a new one: the cream-painted Gloriosiah.

Excitement sent his heart pounding at a blistering pace as the Arabian nimbly crossed the span of dunes between the herd and the lady. Every inch of him was alert and attentive to her every movement once the tobiano came into view. The copper stallion whistled his own greeting from atop the last dune before dexterously picking the way down to her. His smile was radiant, eyes shining with pleasure at the sight of her as Helios closed the last of the space between them.

"Gloriosiah," he began, tones warm in his throat, "I'm so pleased that you came." The sentiment was genuine, and the sincerity of it would show plainly on the lines of his face. "Was it an easy journey for you?" The copper male knew full well that the swim from the Crossing to Salem could be a very taxing one if you were not used to the exertion. Concern tugged at the fringes of his countenance, and he found himself anxious to find out if she was well and had had no trouble.
