No one is coming to save you,
Get up.
She shifts, turning to face him head on and he is momentarily distracted by the way the movement lifted a few errant strands of her mane, fluttering them in the light. Her eyes are magnetic, however, and his gaze does not linger elsewhere long, especially when she opens her mouth to speak again.
He does not bother to hide his shock, the emotion widening his eyes and stalling his breathing as he listens to her proposal. He knows it is wiser to be more guarded, to be more cautious, to wear the stone mask his father had so often worn, but he cannot be bothered to hold it in the presence of Marceline. Especially not when she offered to get him everything he wanted, beginning and ending with her at his side.
Naked greed - born from appreciation for her, from desire of her - flickers to life in his eyes, warming the blank look of shock that had been there first and he smiled, the curl of his lips boyish. "You do spoil me so," he murmured, biding time as he attempted to rationalize what she had said. He should weigh the ramifications more, to inquire after how she planned to bring the Hills to heel, to make sure her methods aligned with his own, but his mind kept circling back to the fact that she would be with him.
His Queen. His partner.
The memory of Nyimara, of what he'd also promised her, ghosted through the back of his mind like a chill in the middle of a summer's day, but he let the thought pass. He could figure out that problem later. For now, he had Marceline and the beautiful future she'd dangled before his nose like the most exquisite bait, and he was nothing if not hungry for what she offered.
"Yes," he finally murmured, as if he could have answered with anything else.
