The hoofbeats were far from subtle, given that they belonged to a veritable giant of a horse. The slender black creature that approached me towered over me by at least twelve inches, if not more, and carried a build that I rarely saw on these islands. Unlike me - petite, compact, utterly unremarkable - she was lean and strong, her powerful neck bowed into an arch. Young, too, I thought, although it was hard to tell anyone's true age on the islands. Maybe even as young as me, which was a refreshing thought.
I blew out a slow breath as I watched her approach, feigning nonchalance until she was close enough that I could count the lashes adorning her sharp brown eyes. Only then did I bob my head up, letting the short curled strands of my forelock bounce into place. Her words teased a short bark of laughter from me and I frowned at her, tilting my head inquisitively, not quite certain how to take her blase introduction. It wasn't exactly out of the ordinary, but perhaps that was okay.
The rest of her was so far from what I had expected, and maybe that made up for the generic greeting.
"Well that depends, Yaga." I teased, a flicker of wicked playfulness in my brown eyes as I shifted to face her.
"Before I tell you though, I want to hear your theory about why I'm here." The smile that had appeared when she approached broadened and I lifted my face - comically small next to hers - and gestured toward my figure. Definitely was not just a blatant attempt to feel her eyes roaming over me, no, not at all.
"When you look at me, why do you think I found myself here?"
