the sun a cruel mockery

It had already been a tense day by the time Lucifer's summons came on a blistering breeze. It had been like that for months, if Helios was honest with himself. The relationship between father and son had been strained ever since the Arabian had told his spotted son of the deal he had made: a year of Kade's service to Lucifer in exchange for a truce. There would be peace in the Dunes.

It had only cost a piece of Helios' soul for using one of his children as a pawn, a bartering chip.

The dark-faced fledgling glowered in the direction of the call. His anger was a hot flush once more through his body. Akkadian had come to accept the deal, as well as his father's weakness. It still infuriated the boy that he was offered and not Caesarion, the precious heir. His older brother. However, he had also found a different way to look at this situation.

Kade had decided that this preferential treatment made his sire and sibling weaker than he was. Helios wasn't fighting for peace. And Caesarion, he wasn't pushing the copper lead to fight; he was just letting their father protect him. As if he were still a weanling, an insipid child. If they weren't willing to fight to keep the herd together, Akkadian knew he had find a way to work it to his advantage as his mother had long advised him to do.

Wordlessly, Akkadian began following his sire toward the shoreline. His thoughts milled, repeating his dam's instructions and other things he had thought about since the deal had been revealed to him. He hadn't laid eyes on this Lucifer before and so was surprised at the sheer behemoth of the draft's size. Desert-orange eyes flick to the Dunes lead, tension rolling off of his sire in waves.

"Lucifer," acknowledged the copper male, voice low and edged with ice. The two year-old flicked an ear in annoyance, but kept his own features schooled into a stony apathy. It started now, his plan. Reveal no weakness, no fear. So, he watched the interaction between the two older stallions, eyes keenly on their body language and ears open to their underlying intent.
