fear not the darkness: fear not the darkness: it is only me

His gaze skimmed across the surrounding area frantically, relying on visual memory to find the plants he needed because his mind was far too frantic to be logical. There was no yarrow near them, but his gaze found a small thriving patch of wild plantain and he gravitated towards it, ripping a neat pile of leaves while Ashteroth told him of the girl's origin.

So theirs then, but not by blood. The thought awakened a complicated tumble of emotions wrapped around his memories of Shenzi and Merriwit, but he stuffed those down further and carried the pile of leaves toward the girl. Ideally, he'd be able to make a poultice of some kind, but he was not near a suitable rock and he figured it would be better to simply cover them with the mild pain reliever and antiseptic plant for now and then do something more lasting later.

Gecko glanced toward the roan mare as she mentioned that they didn't have names, surprised to hear it, though he did his best to hide it. She had been so... independent during the whole thing that he had simply assumed that she would have already decided what they were to be named, and how they were to be raised. He had done his best to temper his expectations of fatherhood, always reminding himself that he was a trinket. The fact that Ash had chosen him to start a family with, did not necessarily raise him beyond 'conveniently available' status in her estimation and to set his hopes on anything else was foolish.

He hummed beneath his breath thoughtfully, brow furrowed as he considered the options. Did parents normally name their children right away? Did they wait to see their personalities? Was it bad luck to wait? He remained quiet for a moment, his focus on the filly as he carefully laid slightly crushed plantain leaves over her injuries, very carefully smoothing them into place until she resembled nothing so much as a piece of the earth itself. Gecko did his best not to wake her, hoping that the pain-relieving properties would help assuage any discomfort he might have inadvertently caused.

When he could stall no longer, he raised his gaze back to the beautiful Peak Codebreaker and searched her expression for any clues. Any names he might have been able to supply were of Turkish origin, from the parents that would never be here to meet their grandchildren. Which was probably just as well, considering both of them would have been rather disappointed he hadn't found himself a proper Teke partner. "What sort of names were you thinking of, Ash?"
