This essentially means that it is acceptable to use these pages to seek sponsorship for The Fusiliers Aid Society (which includes Fallen Fusiliers), and The Fusilier Memorial fund only. We now have our own dedicated justgiving site (http://www.justgiving.com/fusiliersaidsociety), which you can use to help raise money for your cause. If you let RHQ (Asst Regt Sec) know the specific cause you are raising money for, it will be directed to the correct fund. Good Afternoon Leonard
Many thanks for contacting the LF Web Site.
Your Uncle's details as shown below, are confirmed by the CWGC Web Site. If you would kindly check your email, I have sent, as attachments, copies of his Medal Card and Regimental entry confirming his entitlement to the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
Now then......KIA 21st March 1918.
From the 15th March to 21st March 1918 the 2/8th Battalion LF were in the trenches at Ronssoy, and following a heavy German attack on the 21st, were withdrawn to Templeux-le Gérard. The Germans resumed their attack on the 22nd, and the Battalion was again withdrawn under very heavy attack to Buire and Biaches.
From 23rd March the 2/8th were held in reserve at Biaches, until the 25th, when a further heavy German attack saw the Battalion withdrawn to Dompierre. The rest of the month involved sustained rear guard action under heavy German attack, until the Battalion was finally withdrawn from the front line. On 2nd April the 2/8th travelled by train from Saleux to Longpre. April, through to July 1918, were spent at various locations in Flanders, until 31st July when the 2/8th Cadre were disbanded.
Leonard...further research for you?
The terrible events of March 1918 are outlined in detail on pages 287 to 325 of the History of the Lancashire Fusiliers 1914-1918 by Major General J.C. Latter CBE., MC. Copies can sometimes be obtaining through your local library lending service.
March 1918 was utterly disastrous for the British Army, bringing about the virtual annihilation of the 197th British Infantry Division. The following is taken from the first sentence of the chapter in Latter 's book, simply entitled " March 1918 "......
"It had been for some time evident that the Germans, considerably strengthened on the Western Front by the collapse of Russia, intended to make a supreme effort to inflict defeat on the British and French Armies before the appearance in the field of the American Armies......"
The German onslaught was horrendous.
If I can assist further, please get back to me.
Please acknowledge this post.
