The Prairie had given Willa everything she had ever needed. Safety, happiness, comfort. She had loved to be surrounded by her large family and their kind, smiling faces. Even her mother had grown to be as happy and contented as the others; but things could change so quickly. And change they had. Her father's decision to leave for the Mainland had been a surprise to many. Eirena and Willa had planned to follow him. Willa loved her family, desperately. When it came time to plunge into the cold sea and swim, Eirena could not bring herself to touch the water. She stood on the shore, knees trembling and eyes watering. She could not bare the thought of the sea, how it had plagued her life in the past. And so Eirena remained, and Willa could not abandon her mother. With great sadness Willa watched her family disappear in the distance.
It was not long until Eirena passed quietly in her favorite patch of flowers. She looked peaceful, like she was sleeping. And like that, the ties that kept Willa chained to the Prairie were gone. Her entire world had been shattered in a matter of days. She had gone from never knowing sadness to having it's icy hand around her throat.
Willa had considered staying under the new Prairie king, but Lir was not family to her. Her father trusted him, but she did not know him. She trusted Zevulun's judgment, but she could not help but feel that things had changed so much for her. Too much for her to remain.
She'd been in the Comons for a few days, quietly lurking on the outskirts. She'd never left the Prairie before. The world was so much less flat than she had known and even the smallest of hills made her stomach twist and turn. She'd taken to a small patch of grass in the eastern bit of the Commons, partially secluded by trees, where she slept and grazed. She had never been told of the Commons. She had never been told of many things. And so as she grazed quietly on the too-sweet meadow grass, she was oblivious to what the Commons was or what it meant.
