Father was dead. It was a fact Fleur had a difficult time wrapping her mind around, even all these weeks later. Draco had delivered the news to the herd with such detachment that she could not help but wonder if he'd ever truly felt any affection for their shared parent, or if it was only the sought after title of king that he cared about. It mattered little now - the Hills, and more importantly her family, was irreversibly altered, and there was nothing she nor anyone could do about it. Even knowing this, though, did not make accepting her father's absence, nor adjusting to her new reality, any easier.
Her mother seemed to be ill equipped to deal with the loss of her father as well, something that brought concern to the young roan mare. When brigitta had informed Fleur she was going to look for Evrain, Fleur - quiet, demure, polite Fleur - had nearly exploded then into an uncharacteristic fit of frustration and anger.
'He's dead, mom!' she had wanted to shout, the words burning in her throat like bile,
'he's dead and you're not going to find him! Just stop.' Yet she could not bring herself to extinguish the frail ember of hope that her mother seemed to carry, and so she had watched as Brigitta's halcyon form faded into the distance, swallowed by the sand and the sun and, eventually, the sea.
For weeks after Fleur had vacillated between staying or leaving. Home was a safe and familiar place, but with both her parents gone there was little reason to remain. At least if she left she could find somewhere to start over, a chance at a life that was truly hers. Maybe she would get lucky, she thought, and find a nice stallion to settle down with. It was a far more alluring prospect than staying stuck in the Hills her whole life.
And so, one inky night, Fleur made her way to the northern shores of Salem and plunged herself into the sea. She only glanced back once at the shadowy smudge of Salem on the horizon, blinking through the tears that welled in her sapphire eyes. When she at last pulled herself upon the shore of the Commons, she paused to catch her breath, sides heaving with exertion as she shook the seawater from her golden coat. The luminescent sphere of the full moon hung high in the sky above her, the silvery light illuminating the sprawling meadow before her. The late hour left the Commons mostly empty, a few lingering bodies lurking in the shadows. Casting a wary glance about the vacant field, Fleur took her first few tentative steps towards a new and not so distant future.
