Hi,

I am writing on behalf of my wife Tracy who's father was fusilier Sidney Cook Sid served with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, Army No. 14855402.

He enlisted 19 Oct 1944, and arrived in India 19 April 1945 where he stood guard for the Viceroy of India, Louis Mountbatten, for which he was presented with an ebony, silver-topped cane. He was in the Jhansi detachment. We have a few photos that confirm the 1st Battalion / regiment.

We are looking for any details of what he might have done while in India, as we understand the regiment was acting as peacekeepers (though was surely a highly volatile time).

I wrote to the museum, and received a reply from them saying they had no real information, but anything written of those times was likely in the regimental magazine of the time.

There were no medals in Sid's belongings when he died, but we're sure he would have had one for India. We have contacted the MOD for his Service Record, but they have said it may be "sensitive" (presumably because of Partition?), and may take a year before they can respond.

Any advice, or help you can give is much appreciated.
