give me darkness when I'm dreaming;

Naoise came home eventually with an obviously pregnant red and white painted mare. He had been gone some time, and it would be a lie to say that Arroyo had not worried at least some. But, Arroyo figured his young son was off adventuring, as Arroyo himself had done at his age. The thought that Naoise might not come back, as his elder brother before him, had saddened the red dun, so when he heard Naoise's call his heart stirred with relief. Still, it was a shock to realize what his son had been up to. He was so young, and odd to think that both Deirdre and Amalia might raise children of the same age.

Arroyo thinks of the looming prospect of becoming a grandfather someday, quite sooner than he had imagined, as he walks the shoreline. Shallow waves dance and lap against his hooves, stealing away any tracks he might have left before he takes his next step. The moon is bright this night, and the ocean is quiet beneath her light, gently shushing as it rolls against the sandy shore. There is a sense of peace that fills him, at least for this small moment. One day very soon there will be young children to look after again. He smiles against the light of the moon.
