The grullo flinched slightly when the mare started. He'd clearly caught her unawares without meaning to. His ears splayed slightly, displaying a nonverbal apology. Canis remained where he'd stopped, hooves grinding into the ground beneath him. The hope was that she would relax, trust him enough to have a conversation. Further than that, the stallion wasn't sure what might happen.
Slowly, the mother calmed down. Her ears twisted backward toward him. The tension eased some in the tight muscles of her shoulders. Canis wondered how long she'd had to be on guard for. When was the last time she'd gotten a decent night's rest? Had it been similarly difficult for his mother to be on the run with his younger siblings when her mate's died or disappeared?
Canis shook his head, as if to wave off her words. "I should have alerted you sooner. My apologies." The silver-haired male bowed his head a moment as he offered the words to her. His brow pinched slightly, a little unsure now. "I'm Canis. I just.. thought I'd see if you were interested in conversation." He felt a little silly or awkward now that he'd said it aloud. Maybe she liked that sort of thing?
