Hey gbmcq, your Deuce Geralds comment below reminds me of something that you seemed to have interest in when I mentioned it quite awhile back: “meta” factors WRT overall recruiting strategies.(m) Posted on August 1, 2025 at 04:57:16 PM by LKLIII
The gist is, in the “big picture”, recruiting isn’t merely about whether Michigan (or any other program) gets X player. Although important, it’s also about (or SHOULD BE, IMO) program level performance on several “meta” factors: efficient use of resources, being mindful of opportunity costs, limiting downside risk, etc. A bit like the “Moneyball” version of CFB recruiting.
Example: Losing out on ABC coveted recruit sucks, but it’s less bad if M only burned 10 man hours on the effort, or if ABC went to a team M doesn’t play in the regular season vs if M sank 75 man hours into the effort & ABC ends up going to a regular BigTen opponent. Conversely, landing XYZ guy might look good on paper, but what was the cost? Did he take an inordinate amount of time & hand holding to land relative to his worth such that the “juice wasn’t worth the squeeze”?
The factors a team might view as important & how they might measure them over time could be very complex. And of course NIL $ & the transfer portal adds even more complexity to everything..
Does Michigan or other programs measure this stuff? If yes, what do they care about? If not, why not? Would they consider it if it simply hasn’t been brought up before?
I doubt there’s any clear & pat answers…. Or if there is, it’s unlikely anyone would be willing to get TOO specific divulging proprietary “formulas” for lack of a better term. Still, I think it’d be an interesting subject to read about in a long form “think piece” article from a recruiting fan perspective. Obviously it’d be best covered in the off/slow season for recruitnick reporters like yourself.
