When guys like Ryan and to a lesser extent Verlander can throw and throw, and very hard at that, without blowing out their arms while guys on pitch counts do, there is at least a component of the injury/non injury issue that is due to player physiology and mechanics.
And the research showed damage at 130 pitches, not 110. The recent reduction from the 100-120 range down to 80-95 is because of the belief that bullpen guys are better now, first time through the lineup, they throw harder, etc. Also the ability to play matchups. But those things sometimes are not enough to offset an effective starter. I would not be arguing to keep Flaherty or Skubal in at 115-120. But at 95? Yes. Replies:
