Because……………. Posted on September 3, 2025 at 01:25:58 PM by Stu Neiman
We keep committed players who are comparatively weaker because our ownership made a commitment to them in 2018 - that as long as they remained committed to “the program” (which for us is more than what happens on the court) they would be retained.
Some have left of their own accord for personal reasons. A handful were not invited back for other reasons. But ability on the court is only one part of how the program was and is conceived.
I don’t expect many in this group to understand but it is the way it is. Ironically, in terms of online Jersey sales (at least as of 2 years ago) Douglas jerseys were the #1 seller and Barba Jerseys were #2. And the fans who tune in from other States, who may never place a bet or make the trip to see him live really like Barba. The “non” and “new” Jai-Alai fans who are essential to any success we may have. Many don’t know the difference between a good or bad Costado and don’t care. Barba’s “everyman” appeal reaches beyond the established and ever shrinking U.S. Jai-Alai fan base, which could not support Jai-Alai in any city as a stand alone enterprise at any point in the last 20 years.
