For what it’s worth , Jim , and for the sake of objective debate , Erik played just as good , if not better , as Aritz in Miami singles play seasons in recent years. I realize Erik didn’t excel in Citrus tournaments over the years , but he held his own w weaker backcourters. Aritz played w Irastorza multiple years and finished at the bottom of field, and he didn’t find victory until paired w Lopez. Aritz is an amazing talent w immaculate posture on the reverse , but Lopez was a machine that could carry any front man in Miami to victory at will. I know Aritz has become a force w the retirements of Egi (years ago), Diego, and Goiko, but I see Erik as his current equal counterpart that can challenge him. Erik dominated a Dania roster, for years , against Diego, Zulaika, Arrieta, Arregui (through 2014), Angel (prime through 2014), Hormaetxea, etc., and I don’t view his dominance as being due to weak competition. Dania was loaded w talent , and it’s hard to compare Dania play to Miami play. And to be honest , the most complete player I’ve seen in my 30 years of hi li has been Egi. I know Aritz had his revelation 12 or 13 years ago when he came back and beat Egi in a 35 point singles partido , which was incredible , but I still see Egi as his overall superior , and I see Erik as very close competition. I do believe Goiko and Diego were slightly better than Aritz. Replies:
