The Story of Fusilier Arthur Pool WW1

FUSILIER ARTHUR POOL, THE LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS
Arthur Pool joined the Lancashire Fusiliers towards the end of 1914, joining the 9th (Service) Battalion. They were called Service Battalions to distinguish them as units created during the war, for the war and not as permanent units
In August 1915 Arthur and the 9th Battalion arrived in Gallipoli where it served until January 1916 before being withdrawn to Egypt. It stayed there until July 1915 when it was re-deployed to France landing at Marseille later that month.
The adjutant writing in the war diary compared conditions in Egypt and France: ‘Weather: Egypt Hot, dusty gusts of hot winds daily. France Bright sunshine, warm. Hot 30&31 Mists every morning. Sick: Egypt Average per diem 30 France 10’.
From Marseille they moved to the Arras area, before moving out to billets at Grand-Rullecourt on 21 August to begin a period of training courses and battle practice. In September the men moved on to Puchevillers, where they spent several days practicing for a planned attack before the battalion moved on to Bouzincourt and into the trenches on the night of 16/17 September.
On 17 September 1916 the war diary recorded ‘A heavy hostile bombardment was directed against the front line occupied by the battalion… causing great damage to the trenches and inflicting 70 casualties…’ It looks likely that Private Arthur Pool was one of the casualties on that day. He was evacuated from the area, eventually being admitted to 11th Casualty Clearance Station, then based near Gezaincourt with a gun shot wound to his head.
Arthur recovered and returned to duty with the 2nd/7th Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers in early 1917. While serving with that battalion near Villers-Carbonnel on 24 March 1918, 28 year old Private Arthur Pool from Kelfield in Yorkshire was killed in action. His body was never recovered.
He is commemorated at Pozieres Memorial.
