I did say US jai-alai.
We know that it was thriving here once, and now it's not. Parallel worlds means we can imagine small or large changes in society or politics that would create a different dynamic.
Eg, if for some reason the powers that be were opposed to lotteries, and they never existed, would that have been enough?
Or jai-alai had warmed up to the internet right away?
My favorite idea that could be flying jai elsewhere is what if jai-alai had found a way to host their own internet wagering? They would then get the whole enchilada take-out-wise, which would be very motivating for everyone.
But your point about Basque land is relevant. We have this idea that with today's shorter attention spans, immersive computer games, and all the rest of it, nothing old school can survive. Well, maybe not. A sport that is so big and real and fast-paced and immersive might be a good counter to the endless virtual crap on your cell phone or computer.
So the fact that it's thriving there is a plus, but I would want to monitor the preferences of the latest crop of Basque kids for some insurance. Replies:
