The dappled stallion listened quietly as Hellfyre told him more about her upbringing and what life would have been like had Larkin been born in her homeland. Seeing the mare smile down at their child after having heard all she'd experienced was jarring, but in a good way. A sense of horror had pooled in his gut at Hellfyre's tale. Canis had a hard time picturing things being so bad between herds that children were denied the softness of their youth and sent to fight battles. Then, for it to get to the point that even your elders couldn't remember what started the bloodshed? It was.. unthinkable.
When the mare's focus shifted, Canis' eyes followed the movement of her gaze, the trace of her muzzle over the filly's fur. He couldn't help but chuckle softly when the filly plopped down into the grass. Her limbs splayed over the ground, tangled among her mother's. A smile produced by the laugh was still on the male's pale lips when Hellfyre turned her attention back to him.
His heart ached with the question she asked, the unfamiliarity of a newborn's behavior. Canis let the question linger in the air and extended his muzzle to brush against the mare's cheek affectionately. His white face bobbed in answer when she asked him to stay with them. "Of course, my dear," he murmured against the flat of her cheek. "You did so well, Hellfyre. Rest now."
