CHARITABLE ADVERTISING on Web Site There are many worthwhile charitable causes in existence, but we can only accept sponsorship or fundraising efforts on Fusilier Association websites, that specifically support approved Fusilier charities. This essentially means that it is acceptable to use these pages to seek sponsorship for The Fusiliers Aid Society (which includes Fallen Fusiliers), and The Fusilier Memorial fund only. We now have our own dedicated justgiving site (http://www.justgiving.com/fusiliersaidsociety), which you can use to help raise money for your cause. If you let RHQ (Asst Regt Sec) know the specific cause you are raising money for, it will be directed to the correct fund. Messages soliciting sponsorship for causes or charities other than the Fusilier ones mentioned above should not be placed on the message board and may be removed by the Webmaster. Today as we remember and as my tiny unworthy tribute I would like to tell you about this picture if I may.
Its actually a still from a film taken at approx 7.10am on 1st July 1916 in the Sunken Lane on the Somme. In the film ( still a novelty in 1916) the soldiers are seen laughing and smiling at the camera. In this tiny, innocuous, nondescript lane and in the field to the right of the pic waited approx 600 men of the Lancashire Fusiliers.
At 7.30 am the whistles blew, they stood up and went through the bushes on the left of the second photo ( the exact spot where they are sat in the original pic)and over the lip of the lane. Their objective was the ridge at the top of the fourth photo. Unfortunately the woods you see there were infested with German machine guns.
They were simply cut to pieces as they tried to leave the lane. None of them got more than a few metres, none of them reached even that green patch of grass you see in fourth pic.
By 8.15 the lane you see before you was full of dead, dying and wounded. Out of approx 600 men the Fusiliers lost around 200 killed and 300 wounded in 3 attempts to attack from the lane.
Our debt is ever lasting , our respect and gratitude eternal.
