There is beauty when it is bleak;

’...Are you looking for.. for Asmodeus?’.. The mention of father’s name on the spotted woman’s lips are the first beacon of light that Natyre has felt since she first stepped hooves into Salem’s surf. Small, fluted dials pitch forward in hope as she draws a step back to meet the mare’s hooded gaze. She knew Abba! What her relationship is to her da, Natyre does not question. The simple revelation is enough to renew her faith that this little personal mission she set for herself was not a complete and total failure. With any luck, maybe the nice mother and her children would be able to point her in the right direction. Maybe by dusk she would finally be able to curl up against the chimera stallion’s strong, warm shoulder once more. No doubt Asmodeus would send her back home at some point, if only to prevent Nyimara from going on a war-filled ramage… but at least she would be able to spend a few hours or days with her father.

But in the next breath, Marceline dashes that flickering flame of hope, albeit in a much gentler and kinder manner than Nyimara had.

’...he was a good stallion…’ the gentle tone of the red woman’s voice is filled with guilt.

WAS. That word alone is enough to extinguish the flickering flame of hope like a bucket of cold water dumped onto her soul. Was…. She might be young and naive but even she knew what that word meant. Nyimara was right. Asmodeus was gone.

Almost listlessly, Naytre listens to Marceline confirm her assumption. Asmodeus had vanished and with the way her life was going, she doubted she would ever see him again. A suffocating lump gathers in the back of her throat as she forces herself to swallow back the pain she had hidden when mother first told her. Crystalline tears gather in her eyes as she blinks rapidly to force them back. ’...I still carry him with me…. These two… are your brothers..’ The revelation causes her to glance at the twin colts for the first time. ”My… my brothers?...” she repeats, gazing anew at the pair before turning her eyes back up to meet Marceline’s gentle gaze. ”I.. I didn’t know. He.. He didn’t tell me……” she begins… her voice trailing as she offers the boys a growing smile before gazing back up at Marceline, confusion furrowing her brow. ”Why didn’t he tell me? What about amma? Do…. do you know her too?….” she asks, a sinking pit rising in her stomach. So far, Marceline seemed nothing like the aloof Desert Queen… but Natyre had seen Nyimara transform herself with a moment’s notice…. Did that mean Marceline would too? ”Can…. Is it okay if I come with you for a little while? Please?” she asks, blinking meekly up at Marceline with hope in her voice. Even if she didn’t find Asmodeus, at least maybe she could learn more about him and the family she didn’t even know she had. She loved Cahyr with all her heart, maybe she and the twins could have a similar relationship.
