Jai alai players are a slightly different bunch than your "standard" athlete.
They were not paid a lot, played a very dangerous game, and took a ton of abuse from the "average" fan. Years of "Hey Number 2, you suck" sort of thing. They have no endorsement deals.
Because of all that, they will tend to congregate and maybe be a bit standoffish at times.
But, like you, I won't approach them when they are sitting together just out of common courtesy.
I would think though that someone approaching a former pro to tell them they were a fan would rank a bit higher with the player. If the fan was just a degenerate gambler, they would not bother saying anything to them. They would be too busy yelling abuse at the current players.
