The Sons of Sorozabal

I've been told that Johan and Gorka are the sons of Laurent Sorozabal, who had quite a career in Connecticut.

With all the success of Johan and Gorka, I want to take a look back at Sorozabal. He was always a late game player in my memory and had a "rock star" vibe about him. I remember once in 1988 he was in the #1 in a 9-point singles game in Milford in a packed house and ran in straight out and it sounded like everyone in the building had him in some bet as the house was rocking.

"Rock Star" is an interesting choice of words, as I remember him as an avid music fan and a musician, word was that he was a huge Cheap Trick fan. I actually saw him in the audience at a concert (The Pretenders) at a show in New Haven in 1994. Sorozabal also played the guitar on the recording done by unusual superfan Rod Mitchell, who recorded a demo tape. I still have this recording in my basement somewhere. There was a second demo, with Iker and Raul also joining and becoming a band called "Yooskies" somewhere around 1997-8. I have that too and I think they got played on a local bands show on WPLR.

It has been pretty cool to watch the sons of players I watched when I was young out there on the court. Now if only I could get my 17-year old to play a little more often...
