BEHIND THOSE ANGEL EYESLIES A DEVIL IN DISGUISE

Mazikeen huffs out a quiet breath of laughter at Lucifer's words. "I volunteered. Helping run a territory doesn't come without the occasional errand, after all. Besides, I needed something to get me out of the godforsaken snow." And here to you, she thinks, but the words do not pass beyond her ochre lips.

The spotted mare enjoys her position of power in the Cove and the freedom it affords her, as well as the verbal spars she would often engage in with Warwick, but beyond that there is little that is pleasurable about being in the Cove. It is cold as hell, winter outweighs summer by months, and there are fucking bears. Fearless as she might be, even Mazikeen knows better than to cross paths with one of those behemoths. At least she stood a modicum of a chance against a mountain lion or a coyote, but a bear that was nearly as big as her? No way.

A soft snort blows past Mazikeen's dark nostrils when Lucifer calls her a lady. She is far, far from a lady - indeed, she is more akin to a beast, a sharp-toothed thing wearing horse's skin that brays for bloodshed and craves power. If only he knew of the atrocities she had committed, mere miles from the spot they now stand, he would be reluctant to ever call her such a demure name again. She still remembers that day vividly and with fondness in her heart: watching as Killian's blood soaked the sand in startling red, and later watching as Alisander sank into the sea while the sharks circled in the fathomless depths below.

Mazikeen swallows the saliva that pools on her tongue at the memory of Killian's blood filling the air with coppery sweetness, following Lucifer closely as he leads her to the watering hole. She is not ignorant to the way he carefully guides her around the areas where the sand is loose and quick to sink. Part of her is flattered he would consider her safety, but largely she finds herself amused that he thinks she ought to be treated like some delicate little lady. She had faced challenges far worse than a little loose sand.

Mazikeen peers at him from the corner of her eye as they walk, paying little attention to the unfamiliar animal cries that sound off from the shrubbery or the flash of movement as the birds scatter from their hiding places. Lucifer is right that she has little interest in hearing about the mundane activities every leader deals with. He didn't strike her as the type to keep to himself, though. Surely he had something of interest going on.

"Then don't tell me about the boring parts of day to day life," she retorts with a teasing smirk, "Tell me about the battles you've been in, the enemies you've made, if you're feuding with one of your neighbors, which one of your mares has been particularly hot-headed. You know, the not boring parts."

Speaking of neighbors, Mazikeen could not help but wonder if Lucifer had crossed paths with her mother yet. After Marceline's unexpected visit to the Cove, she had found herself thinking more about the spotted mare, and how her ventures on Salem were treating her so far. Perhaps, after she chatted with Lucifer and staked out the Badlands, she would pay mother dearest a little visit.
