Leave Salem. It was almost unthinkable. The copper-toned stallion couldn't remember the last time he'd left the southernmost island. Any such occurrence would have been years ago. Before Lucifer had targeted him for protecting another. Nyimara and her herd had already crossed the channel by now. And here was Helios, staring out over the water after them.

Trepidation pools in his gut. Helios wasn't sure what the future held, now more than ever. The scent that had washed over him in the land at his back spoke of his past and, perhaps, his greatest mistake. Balefully, the russett of his gaze turns back to the greater part of the Desert. He is not ready to face Mazikeen's well-deserved wrath, but it is something Helios wagers he cannot outrun, not while he still has his herd to gather and speak with. Nyimara had promised safety should he follow her. As his one remaining ally, Helios cannot help but want to take her up on the offer, despite how little he wants to leave Salem.

He'd done nothing when Mazikeen had been won away to the north, and they'd not seen each other since. There is no naive hope that she has forgiven him over time; he'd raked himself over the coals too many times to believe that she would not punish him somehow for everything that had happened, now that they were on the same island again. With a steadying breath, the Arabian turned from the coast and headed into the heart of the Desert: to gather his herd or face retribution.
