Inlet

It had been a long time since Pyre’s trip to the Commons. Long enough that the daughter who had made her so antsy to return home was now grown and gone. With Zohara’s departure, so too had Pyre’s fire left. The desire to run along the beach with her stallion, to laugh and joke and be a light to the world; all snuffed out. While he had appointed her lead mare, she had done nothing but fail Nicodemus by becoming a complete recluse. Even from the one member, the one friend, she had brought here.


To make it easier on Nico, Pyre never strayed too far from the herd, though she never mingled with them. Always on the outskirts, tucked in the shadows, in self-inflicted solitude. So, when Kai calls out to her, the palomino doesn’t believe it to be true at first. Just a play of the wind, or her imagination. But then the scent follows and it snaps Pyre into reality for the first time in what feels like centuries.


With hears perked and eyes alert, she trots out of her secluded area and to where the new mother was waiting. Though the colt is clean, Kai is not and Pyre can tell the child is still very fresh. “Kai?” she says curiously, wondering what the new mother needed from her to call for her like this and in such a state. Surely she would have wanted Nico instead?
