You really think CFD members are propping up housing prices? In the third largest city in the country, with an economy bigger than a lot of entire countries, that’s a wild level of self importance. CFD membership does not move Chicago’s housing market. It’s not even close to a driver in the city’s economic picture.
What’s become trendy though is the attitude. It’s en vogue as a city worker to talk like the city is a dump while collecting a steady paycheck from it. Same thing inside CFD with some people. It’s en vogue to trash the neighborhoods and people we serve, even though those same communities are the reason we have runs, overtime, staffing, and a job in the first place.
If the city really drives you that crazy, do something real: build a skill that travels and go make your living somewhere else. Otherwise it’s just noise.
And the residency talk is the biggest example of that noise. Nobody actually wants that fight or else it would have happened. It’s easier to posture and complain. Meanwhile the actual risk to city workers is always the same when budgets get tight: layoffs, benefit cuts, and concessions. That’s the part people avoid because it’s real. Instead of embracing new roles, changing with the times or being a step ahead, its more whining, complaining and #### talking. So boring.
