And they sound so sweet.
Watching and listening, Nahawi just kept his glassy eye on Thranduil. He didn't say anything for a long while, which made what he had managed to say next even worse. With rattling breaths that indicated the death rattle, Nahawi managed to speak.
“Keep her that way. Even you couldn't change the light in that mare.”
Nahawi never did get the chance to say anything else. Curled around Aase’s bones with his head on her own, the stallions glassy eye turned void of everything. No longer did light shine in its depths. No longer did it lock on Thranduil. Instead, the dun stallion lay finally at peace with the bones of his wife. He had failed her time and time again, but that wasn't something he could change now. In death however, the stallion found her after the veil and raced towards his monochrome lover. In the end, even though he thought he didn't say anything before he passed, the ex-lagoon boss did manage to whisper something that could be heard.
”Im proud of you.”
In death, Nahawi’s name would never be remembered. He had his blood running on the islands, but none of them would speak of him. The only daughter that could have anything decent to say was away on her own adventure. The friends Nahawi made were either dead or hated him now. He had no epic story for the fates to write about. Nothing he could of done was ever going to be mentioned.
That was why, as he lay there cooling and not seeing the world, the wind changed. The soft breeze changed directions and little hoofprints could be seen in the grass. Many didn't believe in spirits or ghosts, but they were real to him. In death, on this little patch of sunlit area, the grass danced as he pranced in a circle once, twice, and a third time before fully vanishing. After that, a pale body slowly came into the falls. She had searched for him just for this.
Eyeing Thranduil, Snapdragon dipped her head before lowering her lips towards Nahawi's cool forehead. “Never give up.” She whispered to the dun and also Thranduil. Twisting her frame away, Snapdragon vanished as quickly as she arrived. In death, it wasn't Nahawi’s daughter that held onto his legacy.
It was Snapdragon.
