He had heard some screams and decided to run towards them. Of course he was stopped a couple times by his heavy breathing. His chest would tighten so he would have to slow down to get himself back together before continuing forward. Not to mention the shake of his legs that made it harder to concentrate on where he was going. It was a miracle he didn't tumble onto the grass.
Finally, the mare comes into veiw looking in the opposite direction. The loud noises had long quieted so he could only assume this is the horse who had been distressed. "Are you alright?" He asks as his pace slows to a walk towards her. He didn't see anyone else around so it must have come from her. "I heard yelling." He stops, giving her a few feet of room.
Even though his own trauma usually kept him running from danger something felt different here. Like someone just needed his help. Hopefully he was right there was no stalliom about to pop out of the shadows and attack him. He wasn't sure he would be able to stand up for himself, or her, if it came down to it.
